Vienna is located in central Europe and has always been a bridge in several meanings. A bridge from Western to Eastern Europe and a bridge between different cultures. This conference was a further bridge between basic research and full scale application of anaerobic digestion.

The symposium was hosted by the University of Natural Resources and Life Sciences Vienna (BOKU) and the Vienna University of Technology under the auspices of International Water Association IWA.

The scientific program included Plenary Lectures, Invited Lectures and Contributed Papers. The meeting covered topics in the following main categories:

The Conference took place at the Vienna University of Technology, which is located closely to the city centre of Vienna.
