Utilization of CO2 from flue gas by photosynthetic biomass

Carbon dioxide, which is purified from flue gas, is used for the cultivation of phototrophic microorganisms (cyanobacteria, purple photosynthetic bacteria, microalgae). Promising strains are selected by a screening process. These strains must be fast growing and have high product yields (e.g. PHB to replace fossil plastics). A suitable photobioreactor system is designed and a reactor at pilot-scale will be built. From the produced biomass, the product (e.g. PHB) will be isolated and the residual biomass will enter a biogas process. Via anaerobic digestion, energy (biogas) is produced and the nutrients will be made available. These nutrients are recirculated for algae cultivation.

The project contains the following tasks:
  • Screening and strain selection
  • Adaption and up-scaling of the photo-fermentation
  • Extraction and isolation of the product
  • Implementation of a biogas-process, including the recirculation of nutrients
  • Economic evaluation of the whole process
