TherChem

Thermo-chemical pre-treatment of residues from the brewing industry and other cellulose-rich substrates to increase the biogas yield

Beer brewing is a very old tradition.  The brewing process has changed very little in the last 400 years, but modern breweries are associated with high costs in the areas of energy supply and waste management.

The innovative TherChem process makes it possible to gain energy - in the form of biogas - out of process waste streams. Energy can be obtained from the methane using a combined heat and power unit, and this energy can be fed back into the brewing process, leading to lower costs.

TherChem represents sustainable energy and waste management based on a combined thermo-chemical and biotechnological process.

The Project comprises the following tasks:
  • WP 1 project management
  • WP 2 thermo-chemical pre-treatment
  • WP 3 anaerobic digestion
  • WP 4 desulphurisation
  • WP 5 demonstration
  • WP 6 dissemination
Duration: Nov. 1st 2012 – Oct. 31st 2014
